I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat, but I have my opinions on who I would vote for today if my State were holding a Primary and I was a registered something or another.
On the Republican side, it would be John McCain. Now first you must know that Fred Thompson was the guy I was pulling for as he most represented what I would like to see, philosophically, in a President: Federalist, small government, pro-business, constructionist.
And I have had my problems with John McCain most especially with McCain-Feingold which I think did nothing to take corruption out of the election process but did curtail free-speech in an unacceptable way. And with regards to illegal immigration I am for enforcing the laws we have first, which includes securing the border, and then having a discussion about what to do with the illegals we already have. I am a firm believer that if we secure the border, and enforce our immigration laws, that when it came time to have the discussion there would be many fewer illegals in our country to deal with.
But having said that, I can not evaluate John McCain as candidate for President with the same filter I would use for a Senator.
So with regards to illegal immigration I don't want know so much what type of legislation he would propose, but whether or not as Chief Executive he would enforce the laws we have. I believe he would.
And I am less concerned about his position on the economy since he, as President will have little effect on the economy. This is also true regarding health care.
What I do care about is Foreign Policy, and on that McCain is superior to Mr Romney. I care about the prosecution of the War Against Islamists and on this I believe he will give no quarter.
I also believe he would be good for our Veterans and active duty soldiers. I think he would work to assure that the VA provides as good as a service and will be allowed by the budget Congress affords.
I also think that he would be good on judges. He has supported all of Bush's picks for the Supreme Court with the exception of Myers. Right headed in my opinion. And given that either Stevens or Ginsburg could retire at any time, it is important to have a seated President that will make a Constructionist choice to replace one or both of them. The fact that Ted Olson supports McCain lends credence to my opinion.
McCain has also been a faithful Porkbuster and I believe he would keep in place the executive order Bush recently put in place to disallow any spending that was not voted on by Congress. The fact that Steve Forbes supports McCain is a plus.
On the Democrat side, I would vote for Obama. Yes, I think that Clinton would be easier to beat in the Fall and anyone who reads this blog probably knows that I will likely not vote for either Democrat. But it is clear to me that while Clinton may have slightly more experience than Obama, Obama has the better temperament to be President.
Which is to say that Clinton has the wrong temperament.
Other than that, there is nothing I can think of that recommends either of these two to be President.
