Election Security Meeting held in Kirkuk
KIRKUK, Iraq – Representatives from the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police and Independent Elections Commission of Iraq met in Kirkuk to conduct an election security planning meeting on Jan. 8.
Elections security will involve close coordination between the IECI, Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces.
During the meeting IECI officials announced that they are re-opening the voter registration period January 15-19 in the Kirkuk Province only. The extra time is designed to remedy the possibility that up to 70,000 Kirkuk citizens failed to receive registration forms during the original period.
The original registration sites will be used
with security provided by the Kirkuk Iraqi
Security Forces. Other topics discussed
included the security plans for an additional 25
polling sites in Sagaron and Qara Anjir.
The meeting concluded with dialogue concerning the extra security personnel, international observers, search personnel, party observers and media who will be active in the area on election day. Safe polling sites will allow Iraqi citizens to vote free from fear of terrorist attacks.
