Republicans in the House decided to bring to the floor the bill sponsored by Democrat Charles Rangle to reinstate the draft in order to show that a) it was sponsored by Democrats not Republicans and b) there really is no support in the Administartion or elsewhere for such a bill.
...the lawmaker who originally offered the bill, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., urged Democrats to vote against it, claiming Republicans were cynically trying to use the measure to escape election-season questions about the war.
The only lawmakers who did vote for the bill were Democrats.
Just two lawmakers, Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., and Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., struck off on their own and voted for the measure.
Which means that even Rep McDermott, who has been a busy boy running around college campuses telling students that if re-elected, the President would act on the draft bill he co-sponsored.
And why you ask was this necessary?
Maybe because of this.
Then again, maybe this is another brilliant trick by Carl Rove, you know, like those forged documents that CBS reported as true, to paint Democrats as folks who are willing to win by any means.
And if you believe that, well....
