Sen "Fritz" Hollings, Democrat from South Carolina has introduced a bill in the Senate to revive the draft.
From S. 89:
A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.
Meanwhile, in the House, Charles Rangle Democrat from NY District 15 has introduced a similar Bill; HR 163:
To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.
The Co-Sponsors of HR 163 reads like a who's who of the Anti-War left and include:
Rep Brown, Corrine - 1/28/2003 [FL-3] Rep Christensen, Donna M. - 5/19/2004 [VI] Rep Conyers, John, Jr. - 1/7/2003 [MI-14] Rep Jackson-Lee, Sheila - 1/28/2003 [TX-18] Rep McDermott, Jim - 1/7/2003 [WA-7]
Forget the fact that neither the Secretary of Defense, the President, nor the Joint Chiefs think a draft is a good idea. And without doing the digging, who will know that it's primarily anti-war Democrats that introduced the bill?
This has little or no chance of passing and all of those who introduced the bill know it.
So my only conclusion can be that this is a completely political play.
So what's the play here?
Headline: Congress introduces Bills to reinstate the draft.
Maybe it's just me...
